Anthony Phillips

Anthony Phillips

Anthony Phillips may be a photographer, but it’s not just his photographs that are attractive. Indeed his site is minimal, but that does not mean it is without appeal. Using subtle shadows, making use of of white space to let you know what you need to be focusing on and using the right typography for the purpose this site is simple, elegant and beautiful.

The site is well done as it caters to who the visitors would be: someone looking for a photographer. The navigation is large and simple, letting visitors know where they are and letting them quickly find where they want to go. It also does not provide too much textual content as it needs not to. When you are looking for a photographer you want to see their work, not hear them talk about it.

Based on the potential visitor and the implementation of this site I would say that it is near perfect. It accounts for all that who would be coming to the site and gives it to them right away in a no frills method.

Clean minimal design, even if it is not really innovative. The banner is too large at my opinion and the drop shadow behind it is not needed. Make it flat, without shadows, and it will be even better.

We don’t really understand what is the purpose of the big numbers (0.1, 0.2, 0.3) untill we realize they are gallery numbers. Each gallery has its own color, so why not use them on the home page ? It would give more consistency to the whole site.

Now, when I’m looking at the code, I can see a bunch of DIVs for the page layout, so the separation between contents and presentation is not really achieved. A single container DIV and 3 column DIVs should be suffisicent to obtain the same result.

Ok, these are criticisms. But the design is not bad and I think you’re on the right way.
