Gapers Block

Gapers Block

What exactly is Gapers Block? Well, according to their website, they are a Chicago-centric web publication providing information on news and events around town. You can check their about page to see what gapers block means, but I don’t care who they are—their site has something that just seems to catch my eye. What’s even better are the sister sites of GB.com, their Book Club, the Drive-Thru, and Transmission—each of which is a slightly restyled version of GB’s homepage. Nice.

My favorite part of GB, aside from the excellent chose of fonts, is the flexible layout. I know I’ve mention similar feelings about other sites, but it really gets me amped to see such great use of grids and stylesheets. The design itself is not all that sensational. It’s success lies in the details that you don’t necessarily notice or think about right away.

For instance, one thing you might notice is the grid. On the homepage we have three columns, but on the about us page two of the columns merge to form a larger one. The spacing and sizing is key on this site, most importantly in the use of whitespace around key elements.

Take a perusal around the site and make sure you hone in on some of the various pages, the different looks that are accomplished using the same site-structure, and the small details that complete the picture for you. Make sure you let us know what you think makes GB unmatched.

Very nice, newspaper style website. I’m impressed. The XHTML source code is an absolute shamble though, empty dividers are used for presentational purposes, break tags everywhere where in fact span tags should be used.
