Oneida

Oneida

Oneida launched their new site May 3. It’s a great looking site, yes, but as much as that it’s great to see a major company designing with web standards. There is a lot of information to take in, but I’m not positive that it could have been presented significantly better than it is. There’s just so much to present; it had to go somewhere.

Be sure to take a look at the new site and then add your comments below!

Wow - I grew up a block from the Oneida Limited offices and factories, and it’s amazing to see this site looking so good. They took a major leap forward!

Any idea what firm designed it?

Great question, Mindy. I looked but I couldn’t find anything that indicated who the designer was. Maybe someone will be able to weigh in on that.

I like it. It’s no easy chore to layout an ecommerce site in all CSS, those guys have it down pat.

The pages load so fast. I don’t like the gradient in the logo, it looks gaudy. It’d be more classy as a flat color. I think there’s a rendering prob in Safari as some things look out of alignment.

This is a nice, clean commerce site. There are some great product shots that are well used, and the designers/developers seem to have a pretty solid handle on CSS. However, I’m always a little dissapointed when a site like this doesn’t validate.

    Hi,

I’ll have to admit that I wasn’t very struck on this site at first glance last week. However, I’ve had a couple of extra squints at it over the course of this week and now feel the design has grown on me a little.

I initially agreed there was too much information on the page, but I now think the amount of information isn’t the problem - but instead how it’s placed.

From studying the homepage I think this comes down to 2 problem areas.

1.) The main navigation (flatware | dinnerware, etc) feels wrong to me being separated from the main image below. The Sub-Nav of Home | My Account, etc, should not be separating these sections and should be placed in more of a global area (maybe top right along with search and shopping bag?) Closing the main nav and the image together (with maybe a few pixel gap) would be an improvement.

2.) At the bottom of the main image it’s split into 3 sections. This is extremely confusing in terms of content, as they feel like headers for the columns below - when in effect they have no relation whatsoever. These should either be used as the headers for the content below, or the columns below displayed differently so they don’t flow on from the split below.

Finally I’ll have to agree with the criticism of the logo. Obviously this may be a long-standing icon of the company, therefore may be difficult to change or wrong for other reasons. However, it just jars with the rest of this site design. If anything it should be brought into line with the soft, pastel colors used for the rest of the site - something along the Browns / Tans / Oranges would probably work a lot better.

Overall a very nice site - but I do see the problems people are having with the perceived amount of content…

    Chris
