Nathan Borror’s latest design iteration is an undead monster of design at its best. Borror went back to his root domain with this one and pulled out an amazingly colorful and engaging redesign. With a shifted focus back to the site’s content, Borror really nails this one.

The most interesting aspect of Borror’s site is the color usage. The colors themselves are bright enough to blind you should you meet them head-on, but in this case, the vivid contrast adds dimension and depth to the site’s design.

With a bold, dark gray background color, the rest of the colors focus your eyes on details based on their connotative temperatures. That is to say, the most important stuff is opposite of the background (near-white). Progressively, the recommendations are pink, conveying a “still-hot” kind of reception, while the older posts are all but cooled down now with their turquoise-blue headings.

The colors would not have worked as effectively had then been used on a white background, but the beauty of the design is not solely based on the sparse color usage. Other design cues really help to illicit the sensations brought on by these colors. The use of empty space and a very narrow, but innovative navigation help focus visitors on the content as well.

My only complaint is the fact that I have to look at the status bar for the topic of the page when using the navigation. Some of the icons are obvious, but others (like a ‘P’ for Posters) are less revealing. All-in-all, it’s a quality design.

What do you guys think?

  1. I agree with you on this one. I love it all except the mystery navigation. Please give us a little text under the navigation icons as explanation.

  2. I like the concept and the sparse use of graphics, but I didn’t even realize there WAS a navigation until much later. I don’t think that’s visitor-friendly.

  3. visitors are generally, pretty lazy. make your navigation the forefront, otherwise people will shrug their shoulders and leave.

  4. I love the simple design and the colourful icon menu! But I agree with the above posters that it’s not clear that the menu is on the side. Other than that; great job! Very refreshing ^_^
