With the last entry of CoulourMod and now TheNews.com.au, it seems as if the current trend may dictate that black is the new black once again. It’s starting to help put to rest some of the cliches about websites with dark backgrounds from the mistakes of yesteryear. No longer are we seeing these designs with yellow or red foreground text, marquees and the ever-so-popular blink tag. Instead we are seeing good looking designs that decide to make use of a [tag]dark background[/tag] and manage to do it well.

Along with the noticeable difference with this design using a dark background comes several other delicious aspects of it. The imagery and effects applied to them help make this design look as smooth as possible and the big header image at the top helps contrast the darker shades of gray that follow bellow. Great design back to back black.

Yes black is definitely back. nice looking site although i think the logos in the foot, if colored; would balance this site and bring more life to it.

I like the black design but the text is way too small for my taste and I don’t really like how all the content from the main namvigation is in the tiny text box on the bottom right.

Wow that is tiny text! Nice design but have to give it a low score for that miniscule font.

I think black is back for SOME things… black can make for a pretty classy website when done well. but it’s always going to be more difficult to read light text on a dark background… text heavy? stay light.

Aside from the gorgeous photo that heads the site up, there is nothing good about it. The text is too small and fairly unreadable. I haven’t really got a clue what the site is about or why, apparently, 85% of what’s on screen never changes.

I actually really dislike this design. All the text is painfully tiny, and not at all visually appealing. The text box on the side is difficult to read and seems very out of place. The sillhouettes of girls in the middle have nothing to do with the website and seem very cheap. Also the site floats left which is very annoying for widescreen displays, it would have taken 3 lines of css to center it. The only positive element of this site is the photo used in the header.

I think this website is a good example of how CSS can be used to make your content completely inaccessible… I would read thenews.com.au if it didn’t hurt.

I’m also disappointed that this site has been featured in a couple CSS galleries. We have to remember to judge websites based on function, not just art.

Apart from being ugly, and tawdry, and devoid of substance, this site is also apparently devoid of any content, unless I’m missing something. What a waste of time.

Hmm, at first I thought “wow”. But when looking at it, it really ain’t that good. The girls? No no no, the unreadable text? no no no, and so on. The image in the header is damn nice though

The font isn’t light enough and there is too much black to be balanced. Otherwise, the design is ok.

This site is not the worst I’ve ever seen, but it definitely is terrible. I’m on 800×600 and the text is 100% ILLEGIBLE. The font used in the right hand scrolling column is sadly bland.
