Veerle’s Blog
![]()
Veerle’s blog has just had a long overdue and oh so amazing update.
Veerle was one of the first bloggers I read, and her tutorials helped me out immensely when I was getting into this game. Her new site design is simply delicious. Let’s see, where do I start?
The typography is just lovely. I love the subtle use of icons, and the oh so trendy grey colour scheme (grey is the new black). Love the strip of colour across the top of the page. Love the styling of the dates. Be sure to check out how she’s styled the comments.
What else? How about everything? The amount of detail and precision in this site is just amazing.
I’ve got to admit a soft-spot for this new type of personal site. It’s no longer “just” a blog, rather a portal into the author’s world. For the most part, this is a great thing. I do miss the column of full text articles these sites drop (great for scanning), but I understand the desire to get away from the standard blog layout.
I’m intrigued that Veerle’s using Expression Engine to power her site. I just wrote a post about my own experiences with EE yesterday. Long story short: yum yum. Look for EE to be big news this year.
Being Veerle’s site, you can bet the code is as pretty as the design. Look and learn.
It’s not all roses of course. There is a lot of information on this page – arguably too much. Veerle has done an admirable job of organizing it, but it still feels heavy to my minimalist’s eye. Some of the content seems extraneous to me, but it’s not my personal site, so I’m not judging. Merely mentioning.
All said, I’d say the bar has just been raised.
Peter Flaschner is the Creative Dictator at The Blog Studio, and an absolute design nut. Once, when forced to search through hundreds of hideously designed sites, he actually became physically ill. Really.

veerle 2.0 it’s cool design… nice to read and usefull
It’s a pretty blog, I love soo much!!!
This design is awesome!!!!
awesome
Lovely design and my favourite element is the multicolored bar at the begining of the page. I believe it is the most original element.
However, I do not digg the right side too much
