Anatomy of a Computer Nerd
There has been quite a bit of talk about Mac’s and PC’s on design sites as of lately. Unfortunately, and fortunately at the same time, I am a PC user. I built my computer by myself (several times), and have spent many hours tweaking the hardware, software, and BIOS to get her where she is at.
But this picture isn’t just about my computer. No, it breaks down the anatomy of a computer nerds work area. I’m sure those more nerdly visitors will share many of the similarities in your computer area.

PCs SUCK. Macs Rool
Well you may have seuperior hardware, and driver support, and even better software.
But…you know what, I forget where I had intended to go with this thought.
In defense of PC’s, especially WinXP, in my 1 1/2 years of having my Dell 3.0 ghz, 1 gig ram, 240 gb hardrive with XP Pro on it, I think I can count on one hand that I have been forced to restart it or having it want to reboot on its own.
On the other hand, I haven’t had very good results with macs, then again, I also haven’t used the latest mac, but that was my one gripe is that I could be in I-movie 2 and BAM, it just shuts the window. No questions asked, no errors, just gone. Real nice.
PCs suck? Personal computers suck?
No way - macs too expensive, and as my good buddy always says, “Macs are for girls.”
I tend to agree…
Damn, you cant have a monitor bigger than you TV! i mean come on !!! where you HTPC? all the true geeks have some form of HTPC :D /me pats my shuttle HTPC :D
my setup can be found on http://phunky.co.uk/2005/ipap/?a=setup&i=125
I am really upset that the first picture I see on that page, I can spot a DFI mobo box.
Why? anyway i got roped in to buying that and selling my old Abit IC7 :/ oh well thing we do for friends!
Is this right after getting a new desk or something? Your junk level seems to be unhealthily low.
That’s right after cleaning it, usually there is one or two ashtrays as well as one or five Coors Lights scattered all about it.
I realize that the junk level is fairly low in this picture, but showing it a code red level, you would not be able to see anything esle.
Hah.
Is that a usb memory stick on top of the monitor?
I want to see a code red junk level some time for comparison. It’s been two months. You should be there now.
I forgot to point that out, but the thing that looks like a flash drive on top of the monitor is my Neatgear MA111. It’s a wireless USB adapter, because I am way to lazy to run CAT5 cables from the basement computer to the second level computer in my room.
If I wanted to show you all an extreme junk mess I could post pictures of my “archive boxes.” These contain just about every peice of computer equipment I have ever owned. I think the furthest I can go back with them is a 250 MB 5′1/4″ hard drive.
I’m too young to have been around computers this long…oh well.
eh eh, anatomy of a computer nerd?
i must be different, look - no junk!
