Is 2 Too Many? Is 1 Not Enough?

Posted on March 10th, 2006 by Shane

We’re getting a ton of great web design examples in via the site submission page — so many that I could easily be doing two design reviews every day. (I have 14 queued up, and I haven’t even gotten through the whole list yet.) Is two reviews a day too many, though? I think, for me, one is not quite enough but two feels like it might be too many.

What do you think?

  1. Having a showcase myself (though not one with reviews) I know this dilemma; I get lots (lots!) of submissions every day, yet some of them simply aren’t good enough.

Let’s just say a good month for me is one with one entry each week. I’ve made the decision to only show the ‘creme de la creme’ rather than adding everything that’s remotely good looking (that’s what nn.veracon.net is for :D).

  2. Hi Shane,

I must say I’m so far impressed with your obvious passion for unmatchedstyle since taking over - hope you can keep the motivation going.

Regarding the number of reviews I’d say go for it! If you have 14 sites of a good enough standard for the gallery (and you have the time available!?) why not?

Sure, you’re going to get the odd quiet week where maybe you don’t have the choice of reviews you have today - but if you hold any back for this circumstance, you’re likely to end up reviewing quite old sites which may have been seen elsewhere.

Again, I hope you can keep up the good work,

    Regards,

    Chris

  3. Very good points, Chris. Thanks!

  4. How many submissions on average are you getting a week?

I’d say divide it by 7 and post that amount per day. There’s no reason to hold off posting them, they’re all going to get seen and read.

People would rather have content than a lack off. The thing you must be careful of is weeding out the not so great from the great. Whilst you’re getting a lot of entries how many of them are showcase material?

Also as the other Chris said, if you hold back you run the risk of discussing old sites.

  5. Yeah, I’m getting 10 to 15 a day, so only a few of those make the cut. I’m thinking you’re right about going ahead and getting them posted if they’re good enough. Looking forward to hearing what others think.

  6. Well Shane,
No reason to be legalistic about your reviews. Do what feels right If that means five one day and none the next, it will be okay. But, remember to weed out the also rans so your site remains a showcase for the excellent.

  7. Actually, I think the worst thing you can do is to review sites just for reviewing sites. If there’s a day where there are no impressive ones, skip that day. If there’s one with lots of impressive ones, go for it.

  8. hi Shane
how about having a team of reviewers to ease the workload? you could forward URL’s to people you think would suit and they could submit their reviews to your site… if that sounds good to you il put myself forward!

give me a shout if youre interested

  9. Actually, the workload isn’t bad. I could do two/day pretty easily. That said, I always welcome reviews (though I might not accept them all).

Just judging by the people who are commenting, it seems like most people see UMS not as a daily destination but purely as a showcase of great design. Thus, regularity isn’t as important as quality (not that I would ever sacrifice quality for regularity).

Is there a point, though, where the daily volume just gets too overwhelming to the point that you stop coming to the site because you can’t keep up? I’ve had some blogs that were that way for me. The content was good but I was forever behind, so I eventually just kept trying.
