Electric Pulp

Having moved from your increasingly atypical “Web 2.0″ layout to a much more unique and elaborate one, Electric Pulp certainly caught my attention. I bookmarked their site many moons ago (I have an entire folder of “Goodlooking Sites” in my bookmarks), but I honestly didn’t think it was that great. Their earthy redesign certainly has them taking a turn for the better.
Prior to their redesign, Electric Pulp’s website was in an identity crisis. It looked like every other website that jumped on the “Web 2.0 look” for their sites. To the average user that’s great, but we designers know there is much better out there. The more subtle design techniques that often make or break a design (i.e., color choice, use of grids, etc) were ignored. It didn’t show their talents or their work and relied on a pretty boring frontpage to hook visitors. That’s changed dramatically since their redesign.
Now we see Electric Pulp housing a great design based on a three-column layout and a unique and engaging design. Instead of relying on straight up text on before the fold, Electric Pulp has decided to let its work speak for itself. By doing so, they enhance the value of their site and are able to give more attention to their design. The design, namely due to the background images on the pages, adds depth and distinction to the site. Rather than using simply using techniques like arrows and bright colors to draw attention, the contrasting background images and layered content accomplish that.
For coming to terms with their original website and striking back with a unique look followed up by a newfound respect for grids, Electric Pulp is unmatched.

If anyone’s wondering, Electric Pulp is also the team behind FeedRinse, basically “a spam filter for RSS feeds.”
Give it look if you use RSS a lot.
This is the best site I have seen for ages. I really like the tones and the general feel of it. definitely going to book mark this one…
