Episode 25 – UMS Podcast

This week we talk about two sites. First up is the blog/portfolio of designer, speaker, and author Elliot Jay Stocks. After that we discuss the new site for Carsonified.

Here’s the link Gene mentioned about Jason Beaird’s website in regards to the “Journal” page and bringing older posts up to the surface: http://jasongraphix.com/journal/

I think maybe Elliot’s site has a bit of an identity crisis. The individual elements are nice, as is the typography, but the layout confounds me slighty.

It’s all fine and dandy not sticking to the grid, there are some brilliant sites in that vein, but the fact that half of the site does and the rest is so loosely defined breaks up the visual flow of the site in my opinion. Also the deliberate breaking of the columns by having images and paragraphs and with negative margins all over the place has the same effect.

@Luke – I actually like the duality between the top half of the site and the “footer” area being so different. The negative margin thing on the top part gave Jay and I some trouble too as you can see in the podcast but I do also like the fact that it’s experimental in nature too.

Did you get a chance to look at the portfolio page on Elliot’s site? What did you think of that?

That’s a great link about the Gestalt proximity principal, thanks for sharing that Luke.
